Colleges gear up for 2023/24 Planet Earth Games: A Sustainable Showdown
Entries are now open for the eagerly anticipated 2023/24 Planet Earth Games, a transformative platform that saw 17,896 student-led sustainable actions unfold nationwide last year, with Keighley College in West Yorkshire emerging as triumphant champions.
The Planet Earth Games initiative serves as a catalyst for colleges to spearhead climate action, bolster student and staff well-being, foster connections to nature, and champion biodiversity. Moreover, it provides a unique opportunity to cultivate young green leadership skills in the collective race to achieve net zero emissions.
From January, leading up to Earth Day on April 22, 2024, learners and staff will actively participate and organise sustainable sports and physical activities, earning valuable points for their colleges in this nationwide competition.
Benefits of Registering:
- Participation for all staff and students
- Access to seminars by sustainable sport experts
- An inspiration box filled with sustainable items
- Marketing and promotional materials
- A sustainable sport guide
- Weekly event updates via emails
- Access to a variety of virtual challenges
- Ability to create customized challenges on campus and in the community
- Live leaderboards
- Prizes for winners in three tiers
Colleges are encouraged to appoint internal Climate Champions to organise their participation in Planet Earth Games. Last year’s event saw colleges organise a series of innovative sustainable projects including:
- Eco gym – a green workout using student power to generate clean energy
- Carbon-free commutes – organised group cycle rides to college
- Vegan cookery competitions
- Environ-menstrual Week – campaign to highlight sustainable period products
- Jungle Gym - a new outdoor exercise space using items that would otherwise go to landfill
Around 30 colleges have already entered this year’s event and are making preparations to launch their efforts in 2024. Chris Broadbent, Founder and CEO of Planet Earth Games said: “We have been absolutely thrilled with the growth of our further education programme and the way colleges and learners have embraced the concept.
“Planet Earth Games is about having fun with sustainability and wellbeing in an inclusive and accessible way. We have been amazed by the innovation demonstrated by colleges and learners and the long-term legacy they have created. We cannot wait to see what colleges come up with this year.”
