Athletics

Athletics is a collection of track and field events, including running, jumping, and throwing disciplines. It tests speed, endurance, strength, and technical skill across multiple events.

England Athletics is the not-for-profit membership and development body for grassroots athletics and running in England, they support 1,750 affiliated clubs and organisations (covering track and field, road running, fell, hill, trail and cross country clubs), 147,000 registered athletes, 18,700 licensed coaches and leaders and 3,800 officials.

RunTogether

RunTogether is a national social running programme, designed to provide fun, friendly, safe and inclusive running opportunities for everyone locally.

RunTogether believes that running/jogging is more fun and easier to become part of your lifestyle when shared with others in a running group.

Training to support the set up of RunTogether at your college

Leader in Running Fitness (LIRF)

  • To participate in a (LIRF) course, individuals must be 18 or over.
  • Once qualified, a LIRF can lead sessions for up to 12 other college members, including staff or students aged 12 and above.
  • Course cost £200 (£160 if affiliated to England Athletics).
  • Course can be completed virtually or by hybrid means:- consists of four on-line self-guided learning modules, remote feedback from a tutor of a supervised session and a 90-minute virtual classroom session.
  • Upon completion of the course, DBS checks are performed before gaining your licence to lead running groups.
  • Licence provides individual with insurance to lead a RunTogether group from your college location or in the community

Leading Athletics

  • Students (14+) and Adults can also attend our Leading Athletics online course, which offers an introduction to the skills needed in leading athletics activities for young athletes.
  • Completion of the course allows individuals to support an Athletics Coach leading elements of a training session.
  • Course cost £20
  • Gain access to resources and athletics activity ideas, to support session delivery.
  • You can request a Closed Course for your college which is a course for your own members only. You need enough participants – ideally 20.

There are many different officiating courses on offer from England Athletics including:

  • Assistant Official
  • Endurance
  • Field
  • Photo Finish
  • Race Walking
  • Starting / Starter Assistant
  • Track
  • Time Keeping

Officiating Course – Assistant Official

  • Age restriction - Course open to individuals aged 14+
  • Course Cost - £15
  • Duration – dependent on course format (between 2.5-4 hours)
  • Course Formats– virtual and face-to-face available
  • Covers the basics of all track and field disciplines

To book onto a course

  • Courses are facilitated on a request basis only e.g., club, college
  • Log onto Athletics Hub
  • Click Register now and complete a short registration form
  • Confirmation email will be sent with your licence number
  • Click ‘Book now’ > Proceed to check out > complete payment process
  • Course booking confirmation email will be sent out
  • All course resources can be access before the course – Athletics Hub> Online Courses > MyLearning

Funetics

Funetics was created by England Athletics to help 4 – 11 year old learn, develop and practice running, jumping and throwing skills all year round, for a healthy confident future.

The funetics offer will:

  • provide training for college students to support the delivery of funetics sessions within track & field clubs, primary schools and community settings

Funetics Club and Community Activator course (open to anyone aged 18+)

  • £100 per student, 2 x online modules & a 3-hour practical course, ideal for a group of 20 students (block-price reduction available)
  • for people who wish to be the main deliverer of funetics sessions

Leading Funetics course (open to anyone aged 14+)

  • £20 per student, virtual or in-person course for a group of x 20 students (block-price reduction available)
  • for people who wish to support funetics sessions led by an activator

England athletics will support the deployment of college students via our track and field club network or via their operators and community partners. Students who attend a funetics training course would be required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of voluntary service, as an activator or a leader, in a club or other funetics setting. This could lead to paid opportunities for the student and provide them with the chance to gain additional coaching qualifications and leadership skills.
