Skills Share – engaging with your local politicians during Colleges Week

Colleges Week is a great opportunity for colleges to build and strengthen relationships with your local politicians. We know lots of colleges will have MPs, Mayors and other prominent local politicians in the college that week on visits and to take part in events you’ve got organised. Another way you might want to them involved is by having them lead a ‘skills share session in the college where they share practical skills with students, reflecting the professions they had before they were politicians.

In recent years we have held some great ‘skills share’ sessions with mayors and students which have been positive for everyone involved and received great coverage. This has included Steve Rotheram delivering a bricklaying workshop for students in Liverpool, and Tracy Brabin hosting an acting masterclass in Leeds.

We know lots of you will have brand new MPs, many of whom will have had interesting previous careers that would make for a really good ‘skills share’ session. If you would be keen to hold one of those sessions and would like some support, please contact your local Area Director or the AoC public affairs team (public_affairs@aoc.co.uk) who will be very happy to help.
