City College Norwich

At City College Norwich, the dental nurse apprenticeship is successfully supporting learners onto a fulfilling career pathway, while also increasing capacity and access to NHS practices.

With the national and local shortage of dentists, the college is working with Norfolk and Waveney NHS trust to offer an extra grant for NHS practices when they employ and train an apprentice, helping to bridge the skills gap in Norfolk and Suffolk.

The college works closely with local employers to develop and influence the course structure and recently adjusted the timing of the first observations, so they happen within the first four weeks, enabling the early identification of any skills gaps and the opportunity to adjust training plans. Students receive regular face-to-face support and practice visits, which is key in ensuring their individual learning needs are recognised and they get the extra support they need, whether that’s adapted assessment or individualised support. Inclusive practice is at the heart of all resources and sessions, and wellbeing is a priority, with apprentices having direct access to the college wellbeing team, safeguarding team, and enrichment activities. The college’s networking and local contacts enable them to incorporate guest lecturers and visitors to enrich the apprentices’ experience.

The college is currently developing the new Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Standard with a focus on trainee wellbeing and personal development; this is a direct result of a new published document from the General Dental Council (GDC) Safe Practitioner framework.
