Reforms to the apprenticeship levy are urgent, says AoC

Apprenticeships

David Hughes, Chief Executive, Association of Colleges, said:

“The report from the CIPD and the Youth Futures Foundation published today backs our call for reforms to the apprenticeship levy as soon as possible. Our report, 100% Opportunity: the case for a tertiary education system, showed that the introduction of the levy has resulted in perverse outcomes, with fewer young people taking up an apprenticeship and less focus on those from disadvantaged households, while more money is spent on people already in good jobs.

“A guarantee for young people to be able to access a good apprenticeship and more targeted use of the levy to train older staff would result in more people benefitting from the skills they need. With skills vacancy shortages growing and productivity flat lining, these reforms are urgent.”
