Newham College

Newham College groups its enrichment into three topic areas.

  1. Sport, centred on a rotating weekly offer of nine sports from yoga to competitive cricket or football.
  1. Social and interactive enrichment, including activities such as gamers and craft clubs.
  1. Pastoral support programme, delivered as drop-in sessions and can include how to manage finances, a sexual health clinic or confidence building and conflict management.

Enrichment can provide a home and sense of belonging for students. This has been evident with some of the college’s refugee students who have gone on to thrive after joining an enrichment club. Taking part in a club or activity that they may have done in their home country provides an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities and has helped them to grow and form social bonds with peers.

Newham College has a keen focus on providing opportunities for students with disabilities and it’s an area that the college is looking to grow. The college has inclusion ambassadors who promote and inspire students from under-served groups in college to take part in sport and physical activity, as well as green ambassadors and mental health ambassadors.

Colleges deliver a wide range of innovative, creative and fun activities to benefit students. Most of these activities are paid for by the college in either staff time or actual activity costs. When asked, “If money were no object, what would you deliver?”, all colleges said more of what is already delivered to service all students ensuring that they get the best experience they can at college.
