Michael Wood

Michael is an experienced governance professional whose experience spans further education (including GFE and sixth forms), higher education, the third sector and healthcare. Based on his extensive experience as an executive director and company secretary (both in further education and higher education), Michael has carried out many governance reviews working with boards across all of the above areas. Consequently, he has accumulated a depth of knowledge as to what constitutes effective governance best practice. When the ‘mechanics and dynamics’ are right – people and systems working in harmony – good governance is the result.

Michael carried out research into the organisation and culture of colleges as part of his MBA studies which continues to be of great interest to him. In collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, he developed a governance diagnostic tool to promote best practice, including an further education maturity matrix, which was supported by the Skills & Education Group (formerly EMFEC) and the DfE, and which informs his approach to board reviews.

Michael currently acts as company secretary to an education charity based in London.
