Exeter College

Exeter College delivers all enrichment activities under the banner of EXtra, which is promoted to students right from the start of their time at the college to set an expectation for engagement. EXtra includes student events, trips, guest speakers, sport clubs, societies and learner-led clubs like Liberal Arts, Beyond Borders and Chess club.

The programme of activities is managed by a small team in the Teaching, Learning and Development department who ensure enrichment is a cohesive and vibrant offer. This investment shows commitment by the leadership team in enrichment and forms part of the ethos of the college.

Exeter College recognises the benefits that enrichment has on students. Students feel part of the community when they engage with enrichment, giving them a sense of belonging and helping them to explore more than what they have signed up to study. It’s a holistic approach to build confidence, develop soft skills and increase social interactions with like-minded peers.

Ayomide Okesola, Learner Lead for the 'Beyond Borders' club, said: “Personally, I've had the privilege of participating in various clubs and societies, such as the cinema club, radio station club, netball club, badminton club, learner voice and debating society. I also established the student-led club, 'Beyond Borders.' These experiences have not only enriched my college experience but also provided invaluable platforms for skill development and networking.

“These clubs provide students with opportunities to explore their interests, develop leadership skills, and connect with peers who share similar passions beyond the classroom. By entrusting students with the responsibility of driving extracurricular activities, these clubs have evolved into vibrant hubs of creativity, collaboration, and personal development, which embodies the essence of student-led initiatives.”

Max Slaney, Learner Lead for the Chess Club, said: "The college has done an amazing job with Extra and getting students involved in so many different aspects. There's always something going on and it really makes the college stand out and feel like a lively, welcoming environment. I also think that the offer gives such good opportunities for all students no matter what their interest may be and helps inspire students.

“Having run a student club myself, I am able to speak first-hand about how great an opportunity it has been in terms of self-growth, responsibility and organisation. It’s allowed me to develop key skills that can be applied almost anywhere. I believe that student led clubs as a whole provide enriching experiences for not just the people who run them, but everyone involved.”
