It was too late
By Katie Noakes, Tresham College
It was summer 1926. The wind was whistling, birds singing a beautiful melody but something was amiss . Hunter woke up to the noise of a car and people chatting. He sees the new family moving in next door. He heard a voice of a young girl, he looked for her and saw a her standing holding a box of teddies, he stood in awe at her. She was wearing a red polka dotted dress, her light brown hair glistening he noticed her emerald green eyes dazzling .Wow she’s gorgeous thought Hunter . Hunter rushed outside to introduce himself .
“Hey I’m your neighbour, Hunter” he says excitedly, while putting his hand out for a handshake .
“Hey I’m Daphne” she says and smiles as she gives him a handshake. This is when they both knew something great was about to happen.
Five Years later now both 11 years old, their love began to blossom but they were both in denial. Hunter’s family was having a barbeque and invited Daphne’s family. Hunter and Daphne were having so much fun playing rounders with their siblings.
“Hey Daphne” Hunter shouted “I bet you’re going to miss!” as he said that Daphne swung her bat and sent the ball flying into the air. All of a sudden everyone heard an OUCH! Daphne looked up and saw Hunter’s nose bleeding
“oh no” she said under her breath and went to Hunter. She took him inside and cleaned him up. Once they were all done Daphne gave Hunter a wet towel and smiled
“I’ll see you out there and blew him a kiss”. In shock he blushed.
It's now 1940, one year since World War 2 broke out. Hunter and Daphne where at the train station, unfortunately not for good reasons, Hunter had been called to fight. He was in his uniform and Daphne in a red polka dot dress exactly like the one she wore the day they first met. The train conductor yelled
“Leaving in 2 minutes”.
Hunter hugged Daphne and said
” I’ll see you soon”
Daphne cries and said “Wait, I have to tell you something”
Hunter didn’t hear her as the train pulled away from the station.
It had been 6 months since Hunter left. Daphne had not heard from him and was starting to fear the worst. She decided to write him an Aerogram telling him how much she loved him and was missing him. But little did she know there were two military men in Hunter’s house with some terrible news. Hunter had been killed in action. It was too late. He would never know her true feelings.
