Free Mental Heallth Support for Apprentices and Employers offered by Remploy

10 November 2016

Did you know that 1 in 10 children and young people* are affected by mental health problems? These are often a direct response to what is happening in their personal lives. Some of the reasons include: Relationships problems Self-harm Anxiety due to exams Eating disorders Cyber bullying. Think about the apprentices you have trained. Have you ever worked with an apprentice who has experienced any of these issues? It is so important that a young person facing mental health challenges has the same opportunity to complete their apprenticeship as others. To ensure equality of opportunity we have to do two things: Make sure that young people have access to receive tailored, individual support to help them overcome any mental health challenges they are facing. Challenge existing perceptions of employers and training providers, to ensure that they have a strong understanding of mental health in the workplace and an appreciation of the challenges that young people experience. We should also be active in building confidence and knowledge around offering support. The good news is that a new free service has been launched by Remploy in partnership with Access to Work, a Jobcentre Plus scheme. This service supports individuals, their employers and training providers to minimise the risk of young people who do not complete their apprenticeship. Delivered throughout England, the service offers apprentices up to six months of personalised support, to overcome their mental health challenges, and complete their apprenticeship. Together, we can work to change the perceptions of mental health in the workplace, by being more open about it.
