Government review of employment status
19 June 2019
The Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) announced last week that there will be a government review of employment status which could give more rights to workers. The changes being considered could go as far as extending all employment rights to workers. The key areas for the review include:
Determining what employment rights should be afforded to employees and workers.
Identifying and having clarity to determine whether an individual has worker or employee status
Officials at BIS expect to present interim findings by the end of the year and hope to submit recommendations for next steps to ministers by March 2015. AoC will keep members informed of any further progress on this review.
In the meantime, colleges can refer to the AoC guidance on Determining Employment Status for further clarity on the current legal status of workers and employees.
