Applied General qualifications to remain
19 June 2019
Today, the Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed that the initial outcome of the Applied General Review is that this category of qualification will remain.
Going forward DfE will be working with Ofqual to ensure the qualifications are fit for purpose. DfE will be retaining Applied Generals in official performance tables.
In response to the announcement, Catherine Sezen, Senior Policy Manager for 14-19 and Curriculum at the Association of Colleges, said: “We are delighted that the Government has made the decision to retain Applied Generals. Qualifications, such as BTECs, meet the needs of a variety of students in subjects such as performing arts and sport.
“They allow for a broader range of study of a particular subject, and these qualifications are vital in improving social mobility and raising young people’s aspirations.
“AoC will continue to work closely with the Department for Education and Ofqual to ensure that the value of Applied Generals continues to be recognised. It’s vital that these qualifications continue to be robust in providing appropriate skills and knowledge.”
