James Thomson OBE DL MI is one of Scotland’s best-known independent restaurateurs and hoteliers. James was born and educated in Edinburgh. It was in Heriot’s magical seventeenth-century surroundings that James saw and fell in love with the historic Old Town of Edinburgh and developed his passion for history, art and drama. He opened The Witchery at the age of 20, making him Scotland's youngest licensee. 45 years later, The Witchery is an Edinburgh institution with global reputation. In 1989, James opened The Secret Garden at The Witchery, followed by nine enchanting suites, becoming one of Scotland’s first Restaurants with Rooms. The Witchery was awarded AA Best Restaurant with Rooms in 2023/24. In 2003, James acquired and restored Prestonfield House, where he had worked as a student. His multi-million-pound renovation transformed it into one of Scotland’s most luxurious hotel, earning AA Hotel of the Year and the prestigious AA Five Red Stars. For over 45 years, James has also supported hospitality students at Edinburgh College, sponsoring international exchanges and creating the James Thomson Award for Customer Excellence. His legacy is one of innovation, elegance, and unwavering dedication to excellence in hospitality and tourism industry in Scotland.
